Former fast bowler Stuart Broad shared his thoughts on India’s exciting win on Day 5 of the fifth and final Test at The Oval. He admitted that he believed England would win the match from the position they were in, needing only 35 runs with four wickets remaining while chasing a target of 374.
Broad thought that Jamie Smith would hit a few boundaries early and help England take control. However, it was Jamie Overton who hit a couple of boundaries at the start, but England could not build on that. India took the remaining wickets quickly, bowling England out for 367 and securing a memorable six-run victory to level the five-match series 2-2.
“I thought England would do it, If I’m brutally honest. I arrived thinking Jamie Smith would hit a couple of boundaries and it would all calm down. India would have to bring the fielders in to get wickets and then the runs just come freely.”
“It was just one of those perfect mornings where it clouded over, there was a bit of drizzle in the air, the ball was 76 overs old but swazzed around all over the place. Jamie Overton started eight from the first two balls and you’re thinking happy days, done and dusted,” Broad said on ‘For The Love Of Cricket‘ podcast. (2:07)
Stuart Broad highlighted the charged-up atmosphere at The Oval, noting strong support for India. He said it energized Mohammed Siraj, who took 5/104 in the second innings and finished with nine wickets, earning the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Jos Buttler Applauds India’s Remarkable Win
England’s Jos Buttler praised India for their comeback win in the fifth Test. He said England were in control during Root and Brook’s 195-run stand, and it seemed India were out of the game. However, Akash Deep’s dismissal of Brook turned the match in India’s favour.
“Full credit to India for hanging in there. I watched a bit last night, with Root and Brooks, such an incredible partnership, I thought India looked beaten and England were favorites to win the game but that one wicket of Brook brought the game back to life,” he said. (3:54)
