Reports: Rohit Sharma Will Remain Test Captain For The West Indies Series; A Decision On His Future Will Be Made Later This Year

The management does not currently believe that Rohit Sharma‘s status as the captain of the Indian Test team is in jeopardy.

In the upcoming two-match away Test series against the West Indies, the veteran opening batter is almost certain to captain the team.

There are concerns about Rohit’s ability to captain India for the duration of the third World Test Championship (WTC) cycle given that he recently turned 36 years old.

Following the conclusion of the selection committee, a decision regarding Rohit Sharma’s captaincy is anticipated

The selectors will reportedly pay close attention to Rohit’s batting performances in the Caribbean and make a decision regarding leadership before the team’s tour of South Africa.

An authority figure from the BCCI spoke to PTI on the condition of anonymity:

“There are unfounded rumors that Rohit will no longer be the captain. A significant question is whether he will remain captain for the entire two-year World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, given that he will be close to 38 by the end of the third edition in 2025.”

The source also said:

“Shiv Sunder Das and his staff will likely assess Rohit’s batting performance after the two Test matches before making any decisions, in my opinion.”

Because of Australia’s tame victory over India in the World Test Championship final at The Oval, India’s Test team is currently in a very weak position.

Injuries, protracted poor performance, and dubious decision-making have all combined just before a significant transitional period.

Following Chetan Sharma’s fateful reappointment as chairman and eventual resignation, the selection panel needs yet another overhaul.

The source added the following in regards to Rohit Sharma’s status as captain:

“We don’t play another Test match until the team’s trip to South Africa at the end of December after the West Indies tour.”

“This gives the selectors enough time to think things over and decide. A decision can be made at that point after the fifth selector, the new chairman, has joined the panel.”

The passing of the baton is essential because there aren’t enough candidates for leadership positions.

Virat Kohli is close to Rohit’s age and is not likely to take over as national team captain again.

The current Test vice-captain is Cheteshwar Pujara. KL Rahul didn’t perform well when given the chance to lead the team.

Other leaders with limited experience include Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah.
