India’s wicketkeeper-batter and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain, Rishabh Pant, has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during the IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians (MI), held at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, April 4. This marks Pant’s first penalty for this offense in the current season.
Ahead of IPL 2025, four new rules were introduced following a captains’ meeting in Mumbai. One of these rules specifies that captains will be fined for slow over-rate violations and will accumulate demerit points if the offense occurs three times in a season. In the previous season, repeat offenders like Pant and Hardik Pandya faced match bans after a third offense.
Regarding Pant’s latest penalty, the IPL released a media advisory on its official website (www.iplt20.com):
“Rishabh Pant, Captain, Lucknow Super Giants, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 16 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Mumbai Indians at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Friday.”
”As this was his team’s first offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offenses, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 12 Lakh.”
Rishabh Pant had faced a similar penalty last season while captaining the Delhi Capitals. He was handed a one-match ban against Royal Challengers Bengaluru after DC failed to complete their overs on time in their earlier fixture against Rajasthan Royals.
Digvesh Rathi penalized once more for his wicket celebration against MI
LSG spinner Digvesh Rathi was fined 50% of his match fee for repeating his “notebook celebration” after dismissing Naman Dhir against MI. This was his second offense, with a previous fine for a similar act against Priyansh Arya in a match vs Punjab Kings.

Despite the penalty, Lucknow Super Giants secured a 12-run victory over Mumbai Indians on April 4. Rathi was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his impressive bowling figures of 1/21 in four overs.
