Riyan Parag Fined For Slow Over-Rate In IPL 2025
Riyan Parag

Riyan Parag, who captained the Rajasthan Royals in their recent match against the Chennai Super Kings, has been fined for a slow over-rate violation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) imposed a fine of ₹12 lakhs on Parag after the Rajasthan Royals failed to maintain the required over-rate during their victory over Chennai at the Barsapara Stadium.

This penalty falls under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which governs minimum over-rate offences. Parag became the second captain in IPL 2025 to face such a fine, following Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya, who was penalized after their match against the Gujarat Titans.

This season, the BCCI has introduced new rules regarding slow over rates. Unlike the 2024 season, where multiple violations resulted in a captain’s suspension, the governing body has now replaced suspensions with a demerit points system. This means that while teams and captains will still face financial penalties, they will no longer be banned from matches for repeated offences.

Rajasthan Royals Secure First Win of the Season

Despite the fine, the Rajasthan Royals had reason to celebrate as they secured their first victory of the IPL 2025 season. After suffering losses against Sunrisers Hyderabad and defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, the team bounced back with a thrilling win over Chennai Super Kings in their final home game in Guwahati.

The victory was largely driven by Sri Lankan wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who exploited Chennai’s struggles against spin, finishing with figures of 4/35. Additionally, Rajasthan’s pace attack delivered under pressure, with Sandeep Sharma successfully defending 20 runs in the final over, including the crucial wicket of MS Dhoni. Earlier in the match, Nitish Rana’s composed half-century provided the foundation for Rajasthan’s total, which their bowlers managed to defend.

Rajasthan Royals Set to Face Punjab Kings Next

Following their triumph over Chennai, the Rajasthan Royals will now shift their focus to their next encounter against the Punjab Kings. The match is scheduled to take place at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh. With their first win under their belt, Rajasthan will aim to carry this momentum forward and strengthen their position in the tournament.

As the IPL 2025 season progresses, teams are expected to be more cautious about maintaining the required over-rate to avoid hefty fines and accumulating demerit points. Parag and the Rajasthan Royals will look to ensure a disciplined approach in their upcoming matches to prevent further penalties while continuing their push for success in the tournament.
