Rohit Sharma is on the verge of entering one of cricket’s most exclusive elite clubs as he prepares for his return in India’s three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30 at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi. The former India captain stands just 98 runs short of becoming the fourth Indian batter to reach 20,000 international runs, a landmark previously achieved only by Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid.
Currently, Rohit has amassed 19,902 runs across 502 matches, with contributions of 4,301 runs in Tests, 4,231 in T20Is and 11,370 in ODIs. Tendulkar remains far ahead with 34,357 runs, while Kohli and Dravid follow with 27,673 and 24,064, respectively. Achieving this milestone would further cement Rohit’s place among India’s modern greats.
A New Phase In Rohit’s Career
After stepping away from T20Is following the 2024 World Cup and retiring from Test cricket earlier this year in May, Rohit now features solely in ODIs. Despite the reduced workload, his impact remains significant. He enters the South Africa series fresh from a commanding unbeaten 121 off 125 balls in Sydney against Australia, a knock that showcased his class and resilience.
His innings, decorated with 13 fours and three sixes, helped India salvage pride in the final ODI after trailing 0-2 in the series. With commitments ahead that include an ODI series at home against New Zealand, Rohit’s focus is now fully aligned with delivering consistency and experience in the 50-over format. His form against Australia signals strong momentum as he aims to contribute heavily during the upcoming fixtures.
India Banking On Experience After Recent Setback
Alongside Rohit, Virat Kohli is also set to return to ODI action against South Africa, with both senior batters currently specialising in the format. Their comeback carries significant expectations as India looks to recover from a painful 2-0 Test series defeat to South Africa at home.
The recent loss has added pressure on the team’s senior players to lead from the front and restore confidence. With two of India’s most reliable limited-overs performers back in the fold, the ODI squad will look to recalibrate and build momentum ahead of upcoming international commitments. As India begins the Ranchi ODI, all eyes will be on Rohit’s pursuit of the 20,000-run milestone and the team’s attempt to bounce back strongly from their recent struggles.
