
Veteran batter Rohit Sharma became the oldest Indian player to feature in ODI cricket after taking the field in the first match of the three-ODI series against Afghanistan national cricket team on Saturday, June 13, at the HPCA Stadium.
At 39 years and 44 days old, Rohit went past former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath, who previously held the record at 39 years and 36 days during his last ODI against the West Indies in October 1989 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Ahead of the ongoing game, Rohit had scored 11,577 runs in 282 ODI appearances at an average of 48.84 and a strike rate of 92.74. The opener has smashed 61 fifties and 33 centuries, with his highest score being 264 against Sri Lanka national cricket team.
India Grab Early Wickets Against Afghanistan
Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bowl first after rain shortened the match to 25 overs per side. Debutant Gurnoor Brar made an instant impact by striking in his first over to remove Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran for one.
Arshdeep Singh then joined the wickets column in the third over, dismissing Sediqullah Atal for a duck. The left-arm pacer struck again in the fifth over, sending back Rahmat Shah for three to claim his second wicket of the game.
At the time of writing, Afghanistan national cricket team were 79/3 after 10 overs, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz unbeaten on 57 off 28 balls and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi batting on 16 from 18 deliveries.
