Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli make a comeback into the T20I squad to face Afghanistan in 3 3-match series starting from 11th January onwards. Both Indian stalwarts make a comeback into the T20I squad into the Indian after the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals against England at Adelaide Oval.

Rohit Sharma has been named as the captain for the Afghanistan series and Virat Kohli also makes a comeback into the squad. Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly reckons that Rohit Sharma should be named for the T20 World Cup 2024 to be played in the United States of America and West Indies while Virat Kohli should be included in the squad.

“Rohit should be the captain in the T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli also should be there. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player,” he was quoted as saying in an India Today report.

Virat Kohli played a key role in helping Team India qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2022. He finished as the leading run scorer in the tournament with 296 runs from 6 matches including 4 half-centuries with the best score of 82 not out against arch-rivals Pakistan.

Under the captain of Rohit Sharma, the Indian team levelled the 2-match Test series against South Africa at 1-1. It was a disappointing outing as Rohit Sharma led the side to lose the first encounter by innings and 32 runs at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

They stormed back with a stunning 7-wicket win in the second test match played at Newlands, Cape Town. Thanks to Siraj’s 6-wicket haul, India skittled out South Africa for 55 in their first innings. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli scored vital contributions before they lost their six wickets without adding any runs.

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the Indian team won 10 successive matches in the 2023 World Cup before losing to Australia in the finals played on 19th November 2023.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would look them prove their worth after making a comeback into the squad after a gap of 14 months. KL Rahul has not been included in the squad.

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the T20I series keeping the mind the 5-match Test series starting from 25th January on Indian soil.
