Mumbai Indians’ campaign in IPL 2025 hit a speed bump when their star opener and veteran player, Rohit Sharma, sustained a knee injury during a net session. Rohit reportedly took a sharp blow to the knee, right near the IT band, causing immediate discomfort.

At the toss ahead of MI’s big game against the Lucknow Super Giants, skipper Hardik Pandya put all rumors to rest—sort of. “Rohit was hit on the knee. He is missing out,” he said.

Viral Video Raises Alarm Bells

Soon after the news broke, a video surfaced showing Rohit gingerly climbing a flight of stairs using his bat as a crutch. The footage spread like wildfire across social media, and fans began speculating whether this was a minor setback or something more serious.

Mahela Jayawardene’s Detailed Statement

After the match, head coach Mahela Jayawardene opened up about the incident. “Rohit got a hit on his knee just in the IT band and he tried to bat yesterday, couldn’t put any weight on it so again he came and did a fitness test early today to try and it was discomfort for him to bat, put weight on that so he felt that it wasn’t 100% for him to play this game so that’s why we precautioned,” Jayawardene said in the post-match press conference.

The management didn’t want to take any risks. Jayawardene hinted that a few days’ rest might be enough for Rohit to return. But knee injuries are tricky. If the pain lingers, he might be sidelined for longer than MI can afford. “We thought we’d give him a few more days. It was unfortunate,” Jayawardene added.

In his first three outings, he managed just 0, 8, and 13. With Rohit out, MI brought in England’s Will Jacks to open alongside Ryan Rickelton. The pair struggled to find rhythm against LSG’s sharp bowling attack.

Impact on Team Strategy and Selection

Rohit had primarily played as an Impact Player this season, coming in when needed. Jayawardene defended this decision too, “I mean this is, the impact and regular there’s not much of a change, it’s a regular, it’s just we’re taking a guy out and bringing a guy in so we’re technically playing it 12 so you shouldn’t read too much into it, it’s just who we impact, who we out is entirely up to us on a tactical basis.”
