Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli approached South African batsman Dean Elgar with a hug following Elgar’s dismissal in his last Test innings during the concluding moments of the second Test in Cape Town on January 3rd.

Amidst a day characterized by bowling dominance, Elgar, batting for the second time, seemed poised for yet another of his characteristic resilient innings. However, he prodded at a short-length delivery from Mukesh Kumar, resulting in Kohli making the catch at first slip.

Despite the important dismissal at a crucial point in the game, Kohli urged the crowd to show respect to the South African captain and approached him for a heartfelt hug. Despite their past on-field exchanges, Kohli’s gesture acknowledged Elgar’s impressive career in a touching manner.

Regrettably, Elgar had a disappointing farewell on a day of ups and downs in Cape Town. He scored only four in the first innings and managed 12 in his last batting opportunity (South Africa’s second innings).

In the initial Test in Centurion, he was the Player of the Match for his outstanding 185, contributing to the Proteas securing a 1-0 series lead. Elgar concludes his career with 5,347 Test runs in 86 matches, averaging 37.92 and achieving 14 centuries.

India is leading after a day of many ups and downs in Cape Town

After a remarkable win in the first Test, South Africa won the toss and chose to bat on a lovely day in Cape Town.

Unfortunately, the pitch proved challenging for the batsmen, with Mohammed Siraj taking an impressive 6 wickets for just 15 runs in nine overs, causing the hosts to be dismissed for their lowest Test score since their readmission, totaling 55.

In response, India smoothly reached 105/2 before experiencing a slight setback, reaching 110/4. However, at 153/4, they seemed poised for a strong lead before unexpectedly collapsing.

India lost their last six wickets without scoring any more runs, concluding their first innings at 153. Riding high on their comeback, South Africa started well at 37/0.

As anticipated, they suffered the loss of three rapid wickets, concluding the first day at 62/3 in 17 overs, trailing India by 36 runs. Despite missing the chance to bat South Africa into a difficult position, India remains the more satisfied team, given the seam-friendly pitch conditions.
