Team India faced a devastating collapse during the first innings of the second Test against South Africa on Wednesday, January 3 at the Newlands in Cape Town. They lost six wickets in quick succession, adding no run to the total. India was bowled out for 153 runs in the innings, taking a 98-run lead.
In response to South Africa’s 55 runs in the first innings, India lost an early wicket. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a duck in the innings. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had a good partnership for the second wicket. They helped India to take the lead in the innings. However, India lost a few quick wickets and was reduced to 110/4. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli stitched a small partnership for India, before the mega collapse.
India seemed to be going well with 153 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets. However, they lost six wickets in the next eleven deliveries to get bowled out in the innings. Lungi Ngidi bowled a three-wicket maiden over. Kagiso Rabada followed it up with two wickets and a run-out in the over to end the innings. Earlier in the innings, Nandre Burger took three crucial wickets, dismissing Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi also finished the innings with three wickets each.

Records broken on the first day of the Cape Town Test between India and South Africa
– A total of 23 wickets fell on the first day of the Cape Town test match. This is the second most wickets fell on the first day of a Test match. Australia vs England match at Melbourne in 1902 tops the list with 25 wickets.
– South Africa got bowled out for 55 runs, the lost score in Tests against India. New Zealand held the record earlier when they were dismissed for 62 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in 2021.
– This is South Africa’s lowest score that they have registered in Test cricket since 1932, when Australia bowled them out for 45.
– Mohammed Siraj took 6/15 in the first innings of the Test match, finishing as his best bowling figures. This is also India’s third-best by an Indian bowler in South Africa. Harbhajan Singh (7/61) and Shardul Thakur (7/120) are ahead of him on the list.
