He bowled with great control, dismissed Makaram and Hashim Amla to leave South Africa at 12 for 3. South African captain Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers put the pressure on the Indian bowlers with counter-attacking innings. AB de Villiers completed his half-century off 55 balls. South Africa went into lunch at 107 for 3.
Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the dangerous AB de Villiers for 65 ends, an important 114 runs stand for the 4th wicket. Faf du Plessis reached an important half-century off 98 balls. Hardik Pandya dismissed South African captain du Plessis to leave South Africa at 142 for 5. South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and Philander added 60 runs for the 6th wicket. Quinton was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 43. India picked one more wicket of Philander to end the second session at 230 for 7.
In the third session, Keshav Maharaj, Rabada, Steyn added important runs to push the South African total to 286. Murali Vijay and Shikhar added 16 runs for the first wicket. Both openers went in quick succession. Morne Morkel got the big wicket of Indian captain Virat Kohli. Team India ended the first day on 28 for 3.
