Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels it is important for the players to not focus on their records in tournaments like the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. The marquee event got underway on October 16 in Australia. Team India will kick off their campaign on Sunday, October 23 in Melbourne.

Veteran India batter Virat Kohli, who is in good form will be keen to make an impact in the tournament. Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir was asked on Starsports, how big players like Virat Kohli should approach the upcoming World Cup.

Gautam Gambhir expressed that the sole focus should be on scoring impactful runs for the team. He added that even if a player scores 20 runs, they should be impactful enough to take their team to victory. The former Indian cricketer said,

“With the mindset of making runs. There should be no other thought. It is a job of a batter to score runs, and of a bowler to take wickets. And make runs that will help your team win, not just go in your records, you make a fifty or a century. Even if you score a 40, a 50, or even 20 runs, the impact of those runs on the match is important. If you are chasing, score runs to ease off the pressure of the lower middle order”

In such big tournaments, individual records should be kept at home: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir further expressed that in tournaments like the ICC T20 World Cup, players should keep their records aside. He added that winning the championship for their team should be paramount for the players. Gautam said,

“I am confident when you play in such big tournaments, individual records should be kept at home. Individual records have no value in tournaments like these. Winning the World Cup is paramount. Even if you score 200 runs, and your team wins, it’s your legacy. If you score 500 runs and don’t qualify, the runs only go into your record. When the team faces criticism, so do you.”
