India’s dynamic allrounder, Shardul Thakur, is set to make his county cricket debut with Essex, having signed for the opening block of the County Championship 2024. Thakur will be available for seven fixtures in April and May, adding firepower to the Essex lineup. His stint comes at a crucial time, potentially opening doors for his return to India’s Test squad ahead of their England tour in June.
Shardul Thakur’s County Cricket Move
Despite an extensive international career, this will be Thakur’s first stint in county cricket. With over 100 wickets across all three formats for India, he brings immense experience and versatility. Thakur has been in stellar form in domestic cricket, scoring over 400 runs and bagging 34 wickets at an average of 21.67. His all-round contributions have propelled Mumbai into the Ranji Trophy semi-finals.
India opted for Nitish Kumar Reddy as their allrounder in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While Reddy excelled with the bat, his bowling lacked impact. A strong performance with Essex could push Thakur back into contention for India’s Test squad for their upcoming England tour.
Essex’s Expectation from Thakur
Essex is aiming for a strong start in pursuit of their first County Championship title since 2019. Thakur’s dual skills with bat and ball make him a valuable asset. He will partner with South African spinner Simon Harmer, adding balance to Essex’s attack.
Essex’s returning director of cricket, Chris Silverwood, highlighted the importance of Thakur’s signing. He said, “We were very clear amongst ourselves that a high-quality quick bowler, with lower-order batting ability, was a key target for the club this winter. In Shardul, we have signed just that, and we can’t wait to welcome him to Essex and see how he gets on in the County Championship.”
Thakur expressed, “I am feeling excited to join Essex this summer. Personally, it brings new challenges and opportunities to showcase my talent and skills. County cricket is something I always wanted to experience, and I am glad that I’ll be representing the Eagles.”

Indian Players in County Cricket
Thakur follows a rich tradition of Indian players featuring in county cricket. Recent India internationals like Umesh Yadav, Murali Vijay, and India’s current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, have played in the County Championship at Chelmsford.
Essex will kick off their campaign against reigning champions Surrey at home. With Thakur in the squad, Essex aims to establish a strong start. A successful county stint could bolster Thakur’s case for India’s squad in the upcoming England tour. Given his ability to contribute with both bat and ball, he could be a crucial asset in swinging English conditions.
