Shreyas Iyer Can Play Test Cricket For India, Says Wasim Jaffer

The lanky batsman from Mumbai Shreyas Iyer has stood up to the tasks in recent times after he was slotted as the No. 4 batsman after the ICC World Cup 2019 in England. India struggled badly leading to the global event but Iyer has shown the capabilities to deliver the goods. While he still remains an unknown commodity in red-ball cricket, former India opener Wasim Jaffer feels India can try him in the middle-order.

While he has been rewarded mainly as a limited-overs cricketer, Shreyas Iyer averages over 50 in first-class cricket. He has amassed 4592 runs from 54 games including 12 centuries and 23 fifties which proves his mettle as a longest-format batsman.

With India’s middle-order far away from being settled, Wasim Jaffer reckons Virat Kohli & Co can try Iyer in Test cricket. Jaffer, who retired from cricketer last month, feels that the management can use Shreyas Iyer’s confidence in the longest format going forward.

“Shreyas is a very good player as he has got runs in the Ranji Trophy and India A. The guy is in some form now and is confident as well,” Jaffer told SportsCafe.

“There is no harm to try him out in Test cricket. He backs his game and plays the same way no matter what the situation. He has scored 1300 runs for Mumbai in one season and whenever he has got the chance to play for India A he has done well. So I feel when the opportunity arises, he is the guy to look at,” he added.

Although India occupy the top spot in the ongoing ICC World Test Champions, the recent 2-0 drubbing against New Zealand brought them back to reality. With the all-important Australia series Down Under lined-up later this year, India will hope to register their second consecutive series win.
