The Kolkata Knight Riders batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the 2023 Indian Premier League, due to a recurrence of the back injury. He will be undergoing surgery to treat the injured back and is also likely to miss the World Test Championship final against Australia in June.

According to Espncricinfo, Shreyas Iyer will be traveling overseas for the surgery. He is expected to be out for at least three months before resuming his training. The right-hander missed the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy series earlier this year. He made his comeback in the second test. However, due to a recurrence of the back injury during the fourth test, he couldn’t take the field for the last two days. He will have to undergo surgery to resolve the recurring injury issue.

Shreyas Iyer’s trouble with back injury

Espncricinfo report suggested that a bulged disc in the lower back area on the right side is troubling the right-handed batter. Despite taking about six injections, he has continued to experience discomfort. Surgery may solve Shreyas Iyer’s troubles. However, he will miss the ongoing 2023 Indian Premier League as well as the World Test Championship final.

The Kolkata Knight Riders named Nitish Rana as the captain for the 2023 Indian Premier League season in Shreyas Iyer’s absence. The franchise was hoping that Shreyas Iyer could return for the latter half of the season. However, not with the batter opting for surgery, the Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to announce a replacement.

Meanwhile, the World Test Championship final will take place in June against Australia at The Oval in London. Shreyas Iyer’s absence might pave the way for Suryakumar Yadav to get his second game in Test cricket for India. Earlier this year, when Shreyas Iyer missed the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Suryakumar Yadav replaced him in the team.
