Team India batter Shreyas Iyer is set to miss the upcoming 2023 Indian Premier League and the World Test Championship final. He is likely to undergo surgery to address the recurring lower back injury issue, reported the Times of India (TOI). This could rule the right-handed batter out of action for another 4-5 months.

Earlier, Shreyas Iyer suffered a recurrence of the lower back injury during the fourth Test against Australia in the 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy. He did not take the field the last two days and took scans to determine the extent of the injury. The 28-year-old was ruled out of the following ODI series. According to TOI, he had consulted Dr. Abhay Nene, who treats spine complications and is with Bombay and Lilavati hospitals.

Shreyas will undergo surgery in either London or India. He is likely to miss out on the 2023 Indian Premier League and the World Test Championship final.

“Iyer has been advised to go for surgery. He is keen to get operated on by a surgeon in London, but if there is a decent option in India, then the surgery could take place here also,” said a source to the TOI.

Kolkata Knight Riders to name new captain soon

The 2023 Indian Premier League season will begin on March 31. The Kolkata Knight Riders will have to appoint a new captain in Shreyas Iyer’s absence. He led the team in the last Indian Premier League season when they finished seventh on the points table. The right-hander was their leading run-scorer last season with 401 runs in fourteen matches.

Meanwhile, the World Test Championship final will take place in June this year at the Oval, London against Australia. The Mumbai batter will be eyeing to attain full fitness before the ICC 50-over World Cup. The mega-event will take place in India this year in October-November.
