BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is hugely impressed by Shreyas Iyer’s rise as a Test batsman. He scored a Test hundred on debut against New Zealand in Kanpur. The right-hander followed it up with a 65 in the second innings of the Test match. Though India did not win the Test match, Iyer made an impact on the Test team.
Talking to Boria Majumdar In “Backstage With Boria”, Ganguly gave his impressions on Shreyas Iyer’s future in Test cricket. He said that he is extremely happy with the right-hander but added that his real Test awaits in South Africa. Iyer was added to India’s squad for the Test series after his brilliance in his maiden Test series.
With Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane nearing the end of their Test careers, Iyer is being looked at as a potential replacement for the two.
Extremely Happy With Shreyas Iyer: Sourav Ganguly
“I am extremely happy that he did well in his first Test, but his real test will come when he goes to South Africa. When he goes to South Africa and England, with the pace and bounce, hopefully, he will stand up and deliver,” said the BCCI President.
“I think he averages 50 in First Class cricket for a long period of time. I saw his First Class average, he was averaging 52 for a period of 10 years, and you can’t be ordinary to do that. At some stage you need an opportunity to show your talent at the international level” he added.
Shreyas Iyer scored 202 runs in his maiden Test series. Mayank Agarwal top-scored for India with 242 runs and both the batters will look to carry forward the form in the upcoming matches against South Africa.
