Shreyas Iyer’s Recurring Back Injury May Sideline Him For The Start Of IPL 2024: Reports

Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer‘s persistent back problems have worsened, potentially causing him to sit out the initial matches of the IPL 2024 season. As per The Times of India, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain aggravated his previous back injury, which had required surgery and forced him to miss the IPL 2023 season.

Despite his impressive performance of 95 runs for Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha, Iyer had to seek treatment twice for back spasms and later underwent scans at the hospital, ultimately not fielding on Day 4.

As per the cited entity, a source has indicated that Shreyas Iyer might remain absent from the field on Day 5 as well. Here are the details provided by the source:

“It’s not looking good. And It’s the same back injury which has got aggravated. It’s unlikely that he (Iyer) will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL.”

Iyer apparently notified both the Indian team management and the Mumbai team about his discomfort after facing 30-40 balls. He also informed the Mumbai team of his unfitness for the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda.

Shreyas Iyer has lost his BCCI central contract

Following his exclusion from the Test squad against England, Shreyas Iyer, along with Ishan Kishan, was omitted from the recent batch of BCCI central contracts. Many speculate this decision stems from both players not participating for their respective Ranji Trophy teams.

The medical team at the NCA had apparently given clearance for Iyer to play in the quarterfinal, which could explain why his absence might have been viewed unfavourably.

Although Iyer did participate in the semifinal and played a significant role in the final, the severity of his back injury exacerbation remains uncertain. Regarding the Ranji Trophy final, Vidarbha stands at 248/5 in pursuit of a daunting 538.

Mumbai requires five wickets to secure their 42nd title in the tournament, while Vidarbha needs 290 more runs on Day 5 to make a remarkable comeback.
