India’s newly named Test captain, Shubman Gill, stated that his exact batting position has yet to be decided. He mentioned that the final decision regarding his spot in the batting order will likely be made after an upcoming intra-squad match and a training camp in London over the next few weeks.

This press conference marked the 25-year-old’s first public appearance since his appointment as Test captain on May 24.

“We still have some time, we will be playing an intra-squad and have a 10-day camp in London. We will decide the batting order once we are there,” Gill said on Thursday, June 5 (via Indian Express).

He mentioned feeling deeply honored upon learning that he would succeed Rohit Sharma as captain in the Test format. He also expressed his eagerness to embrace the challenge of leading the team in Test cricket.

“It was very overwhelming, at the same time it was a big responsibility and looking forward to this great challenge,” Gill added.

Shubman Gill Remains Calm By Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli’s Test Cricket Retirements

Shubman Gill is poised to lead a fresh phase in Test cricket after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepped away. The right-handed batsman recognized the valuable service of the two veterans but stressed that the squad is not experiencing any additional pressure as a result.

“Pressure is always there in every tour. Definitely, two very experienced players who played for such a long time and won so many times, very difficult to fill their space. But it is not a different kind of pressure, all of us players are used to it,” Gill said on Thursday.

The opening Test of the five-match series between India and England will take place in Leeds, beginning on Friday, June 20. The last time the visitors secured a Test series victory in England was in 2007, when they won the three-match series 1-0.
