The upcoming five-match Test series between India and England is set to feature a new trophy, which is expected to be named in honour of Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson, according to a BBC report. The “Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy” is likely to be unveiled ahead of the series opener, scheduled for June 20 in Leeds.
Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson faced off in 14 Test matches from 2006 to 2012. During that period, Tendulkar managed 208 runs but was dismissed by Anderson nine times—the most by any bowler in the legendary batsman’s 24-year Test career.
Since 2007, the two teams have competed for the Pataudi Trophy whenever India has toured England. India claimed it in the inaugural year, while England lifted the trophy in 2011, 2014, and 2018. The series ended in a draw during their last encounter in 2022, with England winning at Edgbaston to level the series 2-2.
Pataudi Family Notified About Renaming Of Trophy For England-India Test Series
According to the BBC report, the Pataudi family has been informed about the proposed renaming of the trophy for the upcoming series. The Pataudi Trophy was introduced in 2007 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first Test match between India and England, held at Lord’s in 1932.
Earlier in April, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar voiced his disappointment over the decision to change the trophy’s name.
“The recent announcement by the ECB to discontinue the Pataudi Trophy, awarded to the winners of the Test series between England and India in England, is truly upsetting. It reflects a complete disregard for the invaluable contributions the Pataudi family has made to cricket in both England and India,” Gavaskar had stated in his column for Sportstar.
It’s worth mentioning that the Anthony de Mello Trophy is presented to the winner of the Test series played in India. India currently hold the trophy, following their 4-1 victory over England in 2024.
