Former India cricketer Suresh Raina supports the decision of the selectors who named Shubman Gill as ODI team vice-captain. Shubman Gill received the ODI deputy position alongside Rohit Sharma ahead of India’s matches against England and the Champions Trophy competition starting on 19 February.
The selectors face scrutiny for investing the captaincy responsibilities in Shubman Gill while he shows declining bat form in his current run. Shubman Gill lost his spot in a Test match when India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last month while accumulating 93 runs at an average rate of 18 across three Tests.

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has praised Rohit Sharma and the selectors for continuing to use Gill as the ODI team’s deputy captain. The young batsman was selected to be Rohit’s backup for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and the ODI series against England.
“Shubman Gill is the next Virat Kohli of Indian cricket. He has been sensational in ODI cricket. It shows his potential when a player like him gets vice-captaincy for a big tournament like ICC Champions Trophy,” Raina said while speaking on Star Sports
“Because he is very hardworking and a quick learner. And he knows the situation very well. And I won’t be surprised that when India wins the tournament, he can manage the Player of the Tournament award,” Suresh Raina added.
The season before, during his first season in the Indian Premier League, Shubman Gill was not appointed captain. In spite of Gill’s 426 runs at bat, the team missed the playoffs for the first time. Nonetheless, he has the support of the selection committee and team management as a potential captain.
