All eyes will be on Kolkata Knight Rider’s (KKR) young batting prodigy, Shubman Gill when the 13th edition of Indian Premier League commences. IPL 2020 will begin from September 19 in the UAE; five months after its original schedule. Meanwhile, ahead of the start, Kolkata’s new head coach Brendon McCullum has stated that Gill will be a part of the leadership group.
The youngster from Punjab has been donning the headlines ever since he guided India to the U19 World Cup. He also had two good seasons with the Knight Riders and is currently gearing up for the upcoming season. Gill will hope to deliver the goods and push his case for the national team.
Gill will be part of leadership group – McCullum
Ahead of the edition, Brendon McCullum showed trust in Shubman Gill saying he will be part of leadership groups. Meanwhile, veteran wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik will lead the side. Kolkata also boasts the likes of Eoin Morgan in the side, who led England to the World Cup last year.
“Shubman Gill. What a talent, and what a good guy as well. He is going to be a part of our leadership group this year as well, at least in some capacity,” former New Zealand skipper McCullum told www.kkr.in.
“Even though he is young, I am a big believer that it’s not necessarily true that you having played for a long time makes you a good leader. It’s about you exhibiting the behaviour of a leader. It’s always good to have a cross-section of leadership within your group. To us, Shubman is one of those guys we would look to lean on for some leadership throughout this season,” he added.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill batted down the order in the last season. However, he did well when the management promoted in the order. The right-handed batsman is likely to bat in the top-order in this season.
