Punjab have announced a strong and balanced squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, with India captain Shubman Gill leading the list of high-profile names. The inclusion of Gill, along with aggressive all-rounder Abhishek Sharma and premier left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, significantly strengthens Punjab’s chances in the domestic one-day competition.
Their presence adds international experience, composure under pressure, and match-winning quality to a squad that blends youth with proven performers.
Gill’s availability is particularly noteworthy, given his busy international schedule. Even partial participation from the Indian skipper would provide Punjab with a major batting boost at the top of the order.
Abhishek Sharma’s inclusion adds flexibility, as he can contribute both as a dynamic opener and a handy spin option, while Arshdeep Singh’s return gives the side a reliable wicket-taking bowler in the powerplay and death overs.
Well-Rounded Squad With Depth Across Departments
Beyond the headline names, Punjab’s squad features several players who have impressed in recent domestic seasons and the IPL. Wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh offers explosive batting at the top, while Naman Dhir and Ramandeep Singh bring middle-order stability and finishing ability. The presence of experienced all-rounders like Harpreet Brar further strengthens the team’s balance, providing control in the middle overs and depth in batting.
The bowling unit appears well-rounded, combining pace and spin options suited to different conditions. Alongside Arshdeep’s left-arm pace, Punjab have a mix of seamers and spinners capable of adapting to flat tracks or slower surfaces. This depth ensures the team is not overly dependent on one or two stars and can rotate resources effectively through a long group stage.
Challenging Group and Key Fixtures Ahead
Punjab are placed in a competitive group that includes traditional heavyweights like Mumbai, along with Maharashtra, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Sikkim. All group matches are scheduled to be played in Jaipur, where conditions are expected to test both batting discipline and bowling control. Punjab are set to begin their campaign on December 24 against Maharashtra, a fixture that could set the tone for their tournament.
While the squad announcement has generated excitement, the team management is yet to officially name a captain. There is also the possibility that Gill, Abhishek Sharma or Arshdeep Singh may miss certain matches due to national commitments. Even so, Punjab’s squad depth and blend of experience and youth make them one of the teams to watch in this year’s Vijay Hazare Trophy.
