India won the first test match by 304 runs on the fourth day at Galle today after the visitors bowled out Sri Lanka for 245. It is their biggest win for India outside their country. Despite Karunathe and Dickwella scoring runs, none of Sri Lankan batsmen contributed.

With a massive lead of 498 runs, Virat Kohli and Rahane started on an aggressive note. The Indian captain completed his 17th test century and 1 behind Sunil Gavaskar of scoring most centuries by Indian captains in test matches. India added 51 runs in quick time to declare their innings on 240 for 3 with a lead of 549.

Upul Tharanga and Karunanthe added 22 runs for the first wicket in just 2.5 overs. Tharanga and Gunathilkha were dismissed in quick succession to leave Sri Lanka at 29 for 2. Kusal Mendis and Karunanthe played with a positive intent not allowing the Indian bowlers to settle. Both of them added 50 runs partnership for the third wicket. Sri Lanka went into lunch at the score of 85 for 2.

After the lunch break, Mendis and Karunanthe continued to play with positive intent. Karunathe completed his half century off 81 balls.  Kusal Mendis was given out after a review to end a 79 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. Jadeja then dismissed the experienced Mathews for 2 runs. Despite some good bowling for Indian bowlers, both Dickwella and Karunanthe played with aggressive intent ending the second session at 192 for 4.

The third session saw Dickwella completing his fifty in 82 balls. Ravichandran Ashwin broke the 101 runs partnership by dismissing Dickwella. Karunanthe played a good knock of 97 but was dismissed by Ashwin. Kumara was dismissed by Jadeja as Herath could not bat. Sri Lanka was bowled for 245. It gave India their biggest win.

India 600 in 133.1 overs ( Dhawan 190, Pujara 153, Nuwan Pradeep 6/132) and 240 for 3 decl in 53 overs ( Virat Kohli 103*, Mukund 81) beat Sri Lanka 291 in 78.3 overs ( Perera 92, Mathews 83, Tharanga 64, Jadeja 3/67) and 245 in 76.5 overs ( Ravindra Jadeja 3/65, Ashwin 3/71) by 304 runs.

Captain Virat Kohli said: It was a great performance by team India who lost the first test match here in 2015. The pitch did not assist the bowlers much. The batsmen provided the base for a big total.

Man of the match Shikhar Dhawan said: The pitch was a good one to bat on it. I timed the ball and played according to the merit of the ball. With 3 openers in the team, it is a healthy competition.

India takes a 1-0 lead in the series. The second test is to be played at SSC, Colombo from 3rd August.
