The Madras High Court has summoned Virat Kohli and former Indian captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly for promoting fantasy sports apps. While Kohli promotes Mobile Premier League (MPL), Ganguly promotes My 11 Circle. Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice B Pugalendhi served a legal notice to the two of them including Prakash Raj, Tammana, Rana and Sudip Khan for advertising the online sports apps.
The notice was served in response to the death of a few youngsters who lost money by participating in such apps by an advocate Mohammed Rizvi. The court on their behalf questioned the credibility of such apps and blamed reputed personalities for promoting such apps as well.

“The apps are in the name of IPL teams such as Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and some apps are also in the name of the state’s names. Are these teams playing on behalf of the state,” asked the bench as quoted by News 18.
Meanwhile, the case came up just after MPL were roped in as the apparel sponsor for the Indian Cricket team by BCCI. MPL replaced Nike, who had a five-year deal from 2016 to 2020 and was paying a huge sum of Rs. 88 lakhs. Meanwhile, Dream 11, the country’s biggest fantasy sports platform is the official sponsor of the Indian Premier League for its 2020 season.
SRH plays Mumbai Indians in the last league game of IPL 2020. MI along with DC and RCB have already qualified for the playoffs. A win for SRH against Mumbai will take them through to the playoffs, while their loss will pave the way for KKR to make the playoffs as the fourth team. SRH’s net run-rate (+0.555) is better than KKR, which is why a win will seal them a spot in the playoffs.
