As the third Test between India and England at Lord’s approaches on July 10, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has voiced both encouragement and caution regarding the Indian team. He praised their determination after a rough start to the series, where India suffered a five-wicket loss in Leeds.
Despite that, the team bounced back strongly in the second Test at Edgbaston with a dominant 336-run victory — India’s biggest away Test win by runs and their first-ever triumph at that ground. Ganguly appreciated the team’s overall performance, saying, “India has played well. They are playing well. Even though they lost in Leeds, India has played well. But again, next test, it’s a long way to go. It’s too early to say.” His comments reflect optimism but also an understanding that the series is far from over.
Conditions Could Help India
Looking ahead to the Lord’s Test, Ganguly pointed out that the conditions might favor India. According to him, the pitch could help Indian bowlers pick up the 20 wickets required to win a Test match, and he believes the batsmen are capable of scoring heavily as well.
Sourav Ganguly remarked, “Lively pitch is India’s advantage. Our batsmen will score well. We will be in a position to take 20 wickets. We can take 20 wickets. It’s an equal advantage.” Ganguly’s words suggest that while the teams are evenly matched, India might have a slight edge due to favorable conditions.
Gill’s Form Draws High Praise
Much of India’s current success has been driven by the outstanding form of captain Shubman Gill. In the second Test, he delivered a historic performance by scoring 269 and 161 in two innings, totaling 430 runs — the second-highest ever by a player in a single Test match.
Ganguly praised Gill’s impact and potential, stating, “260, it’s phenomenal. I’m sure his career will take a new direction. And I believe that he’s a middle-order player. Right now it’s a honeymoon period, so tomorrow the expectations will be high. Four days later, the tests will be increased.” Though impressed by Gill’s performance, Ganguly emphasized that the real challenges are yet to come, and the young captain’s consistency will define his legacy in the long run.
