Cricket South Africa on Tuesday announced a strong squad for the tour of West Indies which starts in June. The Proteas will play two Tests, and five T20Is in the Caribbean Islands.
Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has received his maiden call-up in the Test squad. Subrayen has consistently performed well in the domestic tournaments and will be a handy addition to the spin department lending support to Keshav Maharaj. Lizard Williams has also been included after he has an impressive tour against Pakistan.
South African managing director Graeme Smith had hinted that AB de Villiers, Imran Tahir, Faf du Plessis, and Chris Morris might be given a chance in this series. On Tuesday when the squad was announced none of the 4 players was there. After hanging up his boots in Test cricket, former captain du Plessis wanted to prioritize doing well in white-ball formats, but he too didn’t find a place.
AB de Villiers like always had impressed everyone with his phenomenal batting during the 14th edition of the IPL. He too didn’t find a place. Moreover, AB de Villiers recently confirmed that his decision to retire from the game will not change.
After being sidelined due to injury during the recently concluded Pakistan series, regular ODI and T20I skipper Temba Bavuma is back to leading the squad. After the West Indies tour, South Africa will travel to Ireland with the same squad to play three T20Is and three ODIs in the month of July. The two tours will be crucial for South Africa as they look to rebuild the squad after failing to impress in the past year or so.
