Team India has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand on Wednesday, January 18, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. After taking time allowances into account, match referee Javagal Srinath determined that the Men in Blue were three overs behind schedule.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20% of their match fees for every over-the-side bowl after the contest’s end time.
On-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Nitin Menon, third umpire K. N. Ananthapadmanabhan, and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal have all levelled charges against Team India captain Rohit Sharma. As a result, no formal hearing was required.
It should be noted that the rule allowing an extra fielder to be brought in inside the 30-yard circle, which is already in place for the shortest format, will be implemented after the ODI Super League concludes. Given the tight nature of the contest and Michael Bracewell’s belligerent form, the Men in Blue would have been in big trouble if the field change rule had been in place.
India won the 1st ODI
The hosts eventually won by a slender margin of 12 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Their next match will be held on Saturday, January 21 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur.
The pattern of maintaining a slow over rate has proven difficult for Team India to break. The point deduction that the violation entails in the World Test Championship (WTC) has already hampered the team’s cause.
Slow over rates in One-Day Internationals do not result in a point deduction from the Super League table. However, Team India has consistently broken the rules, the most recent being a fine of 80% of their match fee during the first ODI against Bangladesh in December 2022.
They were also fined 20% of their match fees for bowling at a slow rate during the first ODI against the West Indies in August 2022.
