The BCCI Is Exploring A Financial Initiative To Compensate Uncapped IPL Players For Their International Appearances- Reports

The BCCI is set to implement a scheme that will financially reward uncapped Indian IPL players for their international appearances, especially those who may not get substantial playing time in the IPL but contribute to the national team, including the second-string side.

IPL players, once acquired in an auction, remain at the same price for three years unless they are released and picked up by another franchise for a different amount in the next auction.

However, a new rule suggests that an uncapped player’s fee may double if they participate in 10 international matches between two IPL seasons.

The BCCI has outlined the criteria for the incentive plan for uncapped Indian players, focusing on two key factors: the auction price and the count of international appearances between two seasons.

The statement says:

(a) If an uncapped player’s League Fee is below Rs. 50 Lakhs before a season begins, and

(b) The player becomes capped or achieves 5 or 10 caps anytime between the end of one season and the commencement of the next season,

(c) If such a player’s contract is extended or traded, the League Fee for the next season and subsequent seasons will be Rs. 50 Lakhs if the player has 1 Cap, Rs. 75 Lakhs for 5-9 Caps, and Rs. 1 crore if the player has 10 Caps or more.

(d) If the player is traded, the League Fee will be determined according to (c) above before the trade. Any increase in the League Fee will affect the new franchise’s Salary Cap. If the player stays with the existing team, the increase won’t impact the Franchisee’s Salary Cap, and it remains the same as before the League Fee increase for the player.

The BCCI has clarified the distinction between capped and uncapped players. A player is considered capped if (a) they feature in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) for an ICC Full member or (b) hold a Central Contract with their national cricket board, which is an ICC Full member.

Players from associate nations, even if they have represented their country in the past, will be regarded as uncapped in the league.

BCCI is set to hold a mini-auction for the IPL on December 19

Teams will get a chance to complete their squads at the IPL 2024 mini-auction set for Tuesday, December 19. Notably, this event will be held abroad for the first time, and Dubai has been selected as the host location.

As per a Cricbuzz report, the IPL 2024 mini-auction will be supervised by independent professional auctioneer Mallika Sagar, who has previously conducted the last two Women’s Premier League (WPL) auctions.

“An independent professional auctioneer, Ms. Mallika Sagar, will conduct the auction and she will be the sole arbiter as to all aspects of the auction,” the BCCI informed franchises.
