BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has rejected rumors of a rift between Indian captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). He dismissed such reports as baseless and spread by certain sections of the media.
India suffered a 3-1 defeat to Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The visitors won the first Test in Perth but lost three of the following four matches, conceding the trophy to Australia after a decade.
Following India’s disappointing performance, rumors surfaced about Rohit and Gambhir being at odds. However, BCCI VP Shukla has strongly refuted these claims, issuing a clarification over the controversy.
“It’s a completely wrong statement, there is no rift between chairman of selection (Ajit Agarkar) and coach, there is no rift between captain and coach. This is all rubbish which is being spread in a section of the media.”

Indian captain Rohit Sharma had a difficult tour in Australia, scoring just 31 runs in five innings, with a top score of 10. As a result, he opted to drop himself from the playing XI for the final Test in Sydney. His decision sparked mixed reactions. Commenting on this, Shukla stated:
“This is also wrong that Rohit has insisted on captaincy. He is the captain. Form or lack of form is part and parcel of the game. These are phases, nothing new. When he saw he is out of form, he dropped himself from the fifth Test.”
The BCCI vice-president mentioned that a review meeting was recently conducted to plan the next steps for the Indian team. He also confirmed that the squad for the Champions Trophy will be announced following a meeting on January 18 or 19.
