Promising Indian opener Prithvi Shaw made a comeback to domestic cricket after serving his four-month ban imposed on him by the BCCI for taking cough syrup without proper medical consultation. The step he took saw him sit out for four months and comeback in the overseas tour against New Zealand in 2020. The board handed the youngster a backdated ban, which saw him making his return in just four months after the ban. The youngster has moved on from the ban and has already played international cricket since his return.

Talking to Cricbuzz, he opened up in the entire episode and accepted his mistake. He said that he took the cough syrup without proper medical consultation and just on the reference of his father. The youngster had felt cold and fever while playing for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in February 2019.

Prithvi Shaw then took a cough syrup from a general medical store without knowing that it was on the list of banned substances. He said that it was his mistake to take the syrup on his father’s advice and its the mistake of both of them.

“I took that syrup for two days, and on the third day, I had my dope test. So that’s when I was detected positive for a banned substance. I can’t express them in words. But it was a very difficult time. I was reading about myself everywhere. I was worried about people’s perception, I thought people were thinking that I was taking banned substances and drugs. I was there for 2 and half months. I was thinking about it every day because I was having a good phase but then suddenly it all went down” he added.

Prithvi Shaw’s absence from the Indian Test squad saw Shubman Gill earn his maiden Test call-up. Shaw was dropped from the Australia series after the first Test which is when Gill impressed the selectors with good performances making it to the WTC final squad.
