Former cricketer Brian Lara feels it will be tough for Virat Kohli to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 centuries in International cricket. The veteran India batter has been in terrific form. He had a dream run in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, finishing as the leading run-scorer in the tournament.
Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of Most centuries in ODI cricket, going past his tally of 49 hundred. During the World Cup semi-final, Kohli hit his 50th ODI century, powering India to an emphatic win. Overall, he has scored 80 centuries in International cricket, 20 away from breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s Most International centuries record. Brian Lara feels it will be a tough job for the former Indian skipper.
“How old is Kohli now? 35, right? He has 80 but still needs 20. If he scores five centuries every year, he would need four more years to equal Tendulkar. Kohli will be 39 then. Tough job, very tough job,” Lara told ABP.
20 centuries seem a long way away: Brian Lara
Former cricketer Brian Lara further expressed that scoring 20 more International centuries will be a massive achievement. He added that many cricketers don’t even have that many in their entire career. Lara opined that he doesn’t think Virat Kohli will be able to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record, as he is already 35 years old.
“I can’t say with certainty, no one can. Those saying Kohli will break Tendulkar’s 100-centuries record won’t be taking cricketing logic into account. 20 centuries seem a long way away. Most cricketers can’t score that in their entire career. I won’t be adventurous and say Kohli will do it. Age doesn’t stop for anyone,” he added.
Virat Kohli has scored 26532 runs in 518 International matches at an average of 54.36. Along with 80 centuries, he has also scored 138 fifties in his career. He won the Player of the Series award in the recently concluded ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The veteran batter scored 557 runs in seven matches, at an average of 55.70.
