Mumbai Indians registered their 2nd successive win defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore side in a one-sided affair played at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on 6 March 2023 in the WPL 2023.

It was a dominating performance by Harmanpreet Kaur’s led side restricting RCB to just 155 and then chasing down this target with ease. Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss and decided to bat first.

Sophie Devine and Smriti Mandhana provided a decent start to the team putting pressure on Mumbai Indians bowlers. Saika Ishaque got the initial breakthrough dismissing Devine with an easy catch to Amanjot Kaur at deep midwicket. Devine and Mandhana added 39 runs for the opening wicket. Ishqaue struck in the same over to dismiss Disha Kasat. Hayley Mathews dismissed Smriti Mandhana to leave RCB struggling big time. She struck again in the same over to dismiss Heather Knight. At the end of the first six overs, RCB made 47 for 4.

Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh provided some resistance before a brilliant direct hit by Kazi ended in the wicket of Perry to leave RCB in deep trouble. The first timeout was taken with RCB at 71 for 5. Kanika Ahuja looked impressive timing the ball brilliantly and keeping pressure on MI bowlers. Pooja Vastkar dismissed well-set Kanika Ahuja caught by Yastika Bhatia. Kanika and Richa Ghosh added 34 runs for the 6th wicket.

Shreyanka Patil looked impressive with her timing and added vital runs along with Megan Schutt. Patil and Schutt added 34  runs for the 8th wicket. It was an impressive bowling effort to bowl out RCB for 155 in 18.4 overs. For MI, Hayley Mathews grabbed 3 wickets, Saika Ishaque and Amelia Kerr took 2 wickets each, and Brunt and Vastkar 1 wicket each.

Mumbai Indians chase target easily

Mumbai Indians chased down this target easily. Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Mathews provided a flying start putting pressure on RCB bowlers. Mathews showed intent right from the word go as she looked at ease. Preeti Bose got the breakthrough dismissing Bhatia. Bhatia and Mathews added 45 runs for the opening wicket. Mathews looked in sublime touch keeping the momentum going.

At the end of six overs, MI made 54 for 1. Mathews and Brunt kept the scoreboard ticking making life tough for RCB bowlers. Mathews completed a half-century off 26 balls not allowing the bowlers to settle. Brunt also looked in sensational touch reaching her milestone off 28 deliveries. Brunt and Mathews put on an unbeaten 114 runs partnership for 2nd wicket. MI won the match by 9 wickets with 34 balls to spare.

For her unbeaten 77 off 38 balls and 3 for 28, Hayley Mathews was named the player of the match award.
