Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones passed away in Mumbai on Thursday afternoon. Jones, 59, died of a sudden heart attack in a seven-star hotel in Mumbai where he was in a bio-secure bubble. Jones was one of the great cricketers for Australia in the 80’s and was known across the cricketing world as a reputed commentator as well.

A legend of his era, Jones has represented Australia in 52 Test matches scoring 3631 runs at an average of 46.55. With a 216 as his best score, Jones scored 11 centuries and was an important member of Allan Border’s team. Jones also played 164 ODIs and scored 6068 runs with the help of seven centuries and 46 fifties.

Dean Jones passes away in Mumbai

Dean Jones was one of the first Australian batsmen cut out for the limited-overs game and he was quite successful at it. He was part of two Ashes-winning sides and one World Cup-winning Australian team. His employer Star Sports issued a statement to confirm the news of his demise.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr Dean Mervyn Jones AM,” Star India, who Jones was a commentator for, confirmed through a statement. “He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements.

“Dean Jones was one of the great ambassadors of the game associating himself with Cricket development across South Asia. He was passionate about discovering new talent and nurturing young Cricketers. Jones was a champion commentator whose presence and presentation of the game always brought joy to millions of fans. He will be sorely missed by everyone at Star and his millions of fans across the globe,” he added. 

Incidentally, Dean Jones was a part of the commentary team for IPL 2020. Last night, he was live on air on Star Sports commentating from Mumbai studios for the Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians game in IPL 2020.

The sudden demise of Dean Jones has put the cricketing world in utter shock. Meanwhile, former and current cricketers have reacted to this news on Twitter.
