The wicket-keeper batsman from Pakistan, Umar Akmal has always been in the headlines for his controversial antics on and off the pitch. He was charged with two breaches of anti-corruption code for two unrelated incidents by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday. The right-handed batsman had been provisionally suspended on February 20 and was issued the notice of charge on March 17.

Akmal was initially suspended from all cricket-related activity in February due to what was described as an ongoing investigation. Thus, he missed the entire edition of the Pakistan Super League which took place in Pakistan for the first year. Umar Akmal now has time till March 31 to respond to it in writing.

Meanwhile, things look worse than it seemed for the out-of-favour Pakistan batsman. Akmal is now facing a potential lifetime ban after PCB anti-corruption charge. According to article 6.2 of the PCB’s anti-corruption code, anyone found guilty of breaching article 2.4.4 of the code:

“failing to disclose to the PCB Vigilance and Security Department (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the Participant to engage in Corrupt Conduct under this Anti-Corruption Code” – can face anything from a six month to lifetime ban from the game.

Umar Akmal has always found himself in the middle of controversy – as a result, his cricketing career couldn’t take off properly. Before these latest anti-corruption charges he found himself in hot water with the PCB for his alleged misbehaviour with a staff member after a failed fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. He has last represented Pakistan in 2019.
