Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has opened up about the challenges he faced after his divorce, revealing that he has not seen his son, Zoravar, for two years and has not spoken to him for over a year. Dhawan and his former wife, Aesha Mukherjee, officially parted ways in October 2023 after 11 years of marriage.
The cricketer had married Aesha, who has two daughters from a previous relationship, in 2011, but their marriage eventually fell apart after years of difficulties. A Delhi court that granted the divorce acknowledged that Dhawan had suffered mental distress due to his ex-wife keeping him away from his only son.
The court also noted that Aesha either did not challenge these claims or failed to provide a defense. However, Dhawan was unable to obtain permanent custody of Zoravar. The court instead granted him visitation rights and allowed video calls for a ‘reasonable period’ in both India and Australia, where Aesha currently resides.
In a recent interview with ANI, Shikhar Dhawan shared that he has been restricted from all virtual contact with his son but still sends him messages every few days. He stated:
“I want him to be happy and healthy. I still message him every three or four days, even though I am blocked. I don’t expect him to read them. I don’t mind if he doesn’t read them—it is my job to reach out. I will keep doing it,” Dhawan said.
“I Miss Him and Connect with Him Spiritually”- Shikhar Dhawan
The cricketer revealed that he embraces spirituality to stay connected with his 11-year-old son. He further added:
“It has been two years since I have seen my son, one year since I last spoke to him. It has been difficult, but you learn to live with it. I miss him and speak to him spiritually… I feel through affirmations that I am conversing with him every day, hugging him. I put my energy into it spiritually. It is the only way I can bring back my son,” Dhawan told ANI.
“I already feel that I am with him, speaking to him, playing with him. When I sit for my meditation, I visualise those things,” he added. My son is 11 years old now, but I have only seen him for two-and-a-half years of his life.”
