Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest Indian to take a wicket in a Youth Test, achieving the milestone during the England U19 vs India U19 match at Beckenham on Sunday, July 13. The 14-year-old, aged 14 years and 107 days, dismissed England U19 skipper Hamza Shaikh for 84 with a full toss that was caught by Henil Patel off his left-arm spin.
With this, Suryavanshi broke the previous Indian record held by Jharkhand’s Manishi, who had taken his maiden Youth Test wicket at just over 15 years of age against South Africa in 2019 at Thiruvananthapuram, setting a benchmark that stood for five years.
Currently part of the Rajasthan Royals setup, Suryavanshi is now the third-youngest player ever to take a wicket in a Youth Test, behind Pakistan’s Mahmood Malik, who still holds the record. Malik had achieved the feat at 13 years and 241 days against New Zealand in 1994 at Faisalabad.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Sets New Benchmark With Fastest Youth ODI Ton
Vaibhav Suryavanshi broke his second record on India’s ongoing Under-19 tour of England. On July 5, the left-hander smashed the fastest century in Youth ODI history, reaching his hundred in just 52 balls, surpassing Kamran Ghulam’s previous record of a 53-ball ton.
Suryavanshi impressed throughout the white-ball matches, regularly providing strong starts at the top of the order. Though he managed only 14 runs in India’s first innings of the Youth Test, the rest of the batting lineup stepped up, helping the visitors post a massive total of 540.
Skipper Ayush Mhatre led the charge with a century (102), while Vihaan Malhotra, wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu, and Rahul Kumar chipped in with scores of 67, 85, and 70, respectively. England U19 also thrived in the favourable batting conditions, with Rocky Flintoff scoring 93 and captain Hamza Shaikh contributing 84.
