Mohammed Shami’s brilliance with the ball sealed the game for India as the side registered its fourth victory of the tournament by 11 runs. The Indian side registered its 50th World Cup victory with this game and fans are so ecstatic for the same. Winning the toss, the Indian side was able to put up only 224/8 on the board. 34 overs of spin from the Afghanistan bowlers restricted from putting up a high total and a tremendous task was on the cards for the bowlers to pull off the game.
Though Indian bowlers weren’t able to contain the run flow in the initial overs, intermittent breakthroughs were provided during the course of the game. However, the second spell form Jasprit Bumrah was the talking point here as he sent both Rahmat and Shahidi back to the pavilion in the same over. However, Nabi’s presence at the crease created a lot of tense faces at the Indian audience and the camp.
Needing 16 off the final over, Shami’s hat-trick played a vital role in scripting a victory. The match went down the wire till the last over as the Afghanistan side gave a good fight right from the start. Mohammed Nabi was the star with the bat as he brought up his half-century with a calm and composed attitude.
It is to be noted that this is Shami’s first game in this tournament and he has been included as Bhuvneshwar isn’t fit. His years of experience and accuracy are the primary reasons behind this and the bowler is all smiled after this victory. He took the wickets of well-settled Nabi, Aftab and Mujeeb in the final over of the game and became the second Indian bowler to achieve this feat. His name will now be alongside Chetan Sharma, who has been the only Indian till date to take a hat-trick in the World tournament.
The Indian side will now play their next game against West Indies at Manchester on Thursday.
