VIDEO: Kohli fails Kumble’s challenge; Rahane emerges as victorious: India’s new head coach Anil Kumble has been working with the boys in a week-long preparatory camp in Bengaluru ahead of the West Indies tour. On the penultimate day of the camp, two days before India fly to Caribbean, the batsmen were put to a real test in a peculiar Test cricket simulation by coach Anil Kumble.
Anil Kumble took the squad out to Alur, a place situated approximately 40 kilometres from Bangalore to test their real skills. Jumbo gave a challenge to the Indian batsmen by asking them to stay alive at the crease after batting for an hour and the bowlers were challenged to scalp as many wickets as possible. Each batsman having to negotiate a trio of fast bowlers followed by spin trio, for half an hour each and can get out twice.
Every batsmen, including the batting sensation, Virat Kohli failed badly as they were dismissed by bowler couple of times. Kohli looked comfortable against fast bowlers and played some good shots against pacers, but the moment spinners were introduced Kohli too failed. Ravindra Jadeja troubled Virat, who was beaten twice with the left-arm spin. Consistent batsman, Murali Vijay too failed to impress the coach as he too was beaten twice by Ishant Sharma”s pace. Unluckily the emerging talent KL Rahul and defense star Cheteshwar Pujara got run out, thereby failing to complete the challenge.
The lone batsman to have survived one hour was Ajinkya Rahane. His technique and determination were spot-on which led him to pass the challenge. Cheteshwar Pujara have also passed the challenge except he was run-out once.
