Viran Chamudhitha Creates History With Highest-Ever Score in U19 World Cup

Sri Lanka’s young batting sensation Viran Chamudhitha delivered a once-in-a-generation performance at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026, registering the highest individual score in the history of the tournament. The left-handed opener played a marathon innings of 192 runs off 143 balls, showcasing exceptional composure, timing, and strokeplay.

His knock included 26 boundaries and a six, underlining his dominance throughout the innings. With this effort, Chamudhitha eclipsed the long-standing record of 191 runs held by fellow Sri Lankan Hasitha Boyagoda since 2018, firmly etching his name into youth cricket folklore.

Record-Breaking Partnership Powers Sri Lanka

Chamudhitha’s innings was further elevated by a monumental opening partnership with Dimantha Mahavithana. The duo stitched together a massive 328-run stand, which is now the highest partnership for any wicket in Under-19 World Cup history. Mahavithana played the perfect supporting role, scoring a well-compiled 115 runs from 125 deliveries, rotating the strike effectively while capitalising on loose balls.

Their partnership completely dismantled the Japanese bowling attack and set the foundation for Sri Lanka’s imposing total. The opening pair batted with maturity well beyond their years, displaying patience early on before accelerating once set, leaving the opposition with little room to recover.

Dominant Team Performance Seals Commanding Total

Thanks largely to the historic opening stand, Sri Lanka posted a commanding total of 387 for four in their allotted 50 overs. The middle order ensured the momentum was maintained, with Vimath Dinsara contributing an unbeaten 44 runs to close out the innings strongly. Despite the onslaught, Japan’s Timothy Moore stood out with the ball, picking up three wickets for 43 runs in six overs, offering brief resistance amid an otherwise challenging day for the bowlers.

Sri Lanka’s all-round batting performance highlighted their depth and intent in the tournament, while Chamudhitha’s record-breaking innings emerged as a defining moment of the U19 World Cup 2026, signalling the arrival of a potential future star on the international stage.
