The Ranji Trophy has always been a cornerstone of Indian domestic cricket, where talented players showcase their skills and prepare for bigger international arenas. For star players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, domestic cricket serves as an essential platform to stay in touch with the grassroots. Unfortunately, fitness issues have recently sidelined these two stalwarts from next round of Ranji Trophy matches.
Fitness Issues of Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has been struggling with neck pain, which became a concern around January 8 and required medical attention, including an injection. Despite treatment, Kohli continues to experience discomfort, forcing him to miss Delhi’s match against Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy.
Fitness Issues of KL Rahul
On the other hand, KL Rahul has been nursing an elbow injury, which has hindered his ability to perform at his peak. Known for his versatile batting, Rahul has been a key player for Karnataka. However, his current condition has compelled him to sit out the upcoming match against Punjab in Bengaluru.
BCCI Guidelines on Domestic Participation
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mandates that players participate in domestic tournaments unless exempted by the national chairman of selectors. This policy highlights the importance of domestic cricket in shaping and maintaining player form. Kohli and Rahul’s withdrawal underlines the seriousness of their injuries, as they have sought permission from the board.
The absence of Kohli and Rahul is a significant blow for Delhi and Karnataka, respectively. Delhi will face a formidable Saurashtra side without Kohli’s leadership and batting prowess, while Karnataka must adapt quickly to compete against Punjab in Rahul’s absence.
While both players will miss these crucial matches, there’s hope they may return for the final group stage encounters from January 30 to February 2, provided they regain fitness.
Scheduled Matches for Delhi and Karnataka
Delhi vs. Saurashtra: Elite Group D match scheduled from January 23 to 26 in Rajkot.
Karnataka vs. Punjab: Sixth group stage match in Bengaluru during the same dates.

Inclusion of Test Players in the Ranji Trophy
Amidst Kohli and Rahul’s absence, other Test stars like Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rishabh Pant are set to feature for their respective teams, adding excitement to the tournament.
Ravindra Jadeja, the top-ranked all-rounder, is expected to shine for Saurashtra. His last domestic appearance was in January 2023, and fans are eager to witness his comeback. Gill, representing Punjab, continues to impress with his remarkable consistency in both domestic and international cricket.
