Indian skipper Virat Kohli is in line for one-match suspension after his altercation with on-field umpire Nitin Menon in the second Test in Chennai. It all happened when umpire Nitin Menon deemed Joe Root not-out but the India captain went on to express his disappointment with the decision to the umpire. India won the Test match at the end and drew level in the four-match series.
On day 3, England’s skipper Joe Root survived an absolutely plumb LBW appeal all courtesy of the DRS rule for umpire’s call. It was during the last few minutes before stumps were to be called when Axar Patel trapped Joe Root on the back foot, with Nitin Menon initially turning down India‘s caught behind appeal, the hosts decided to challenge the umpire’s decision.

Soon after the decision became clear, Kohli went up to Menon and looked extremely infuriated with the way the outcome of the delivery. It has now been reported that Kohli could be reprimanded for his actions and face punishment if match referee Javagal Srinath finds his ‘dissent of the umpire’s decision’ inappropriate.

Meanwhile, as per the ICC code players could be reprimanded if they show ‘dissent at an umpire’s decision’ or are ‘arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the umpire about his/her decision’.
The 32-year-old’s actions could be interpreted as a Level 1 or Level 2 offence. Having already accumulated two demerit points over the past 24 months already, Kohli could see two more demerit points being added to his tally, which in turn, could lead to a 1-match suspension.
Meanwhile, former England skipper Michael Vaughan and cricket commentator David Llyod criticised Kohli’s actions in the Test match.
“He cannot be speaking to umpires like that and inciting the crowd. He should be setting a much better example. Someone in his camp should be having a word and the match referee should be very interested. It’s calculated and it’s not a good look,” said Lloyd.
Vaughan, on the other hand, said: “You can’t have this, I’m sorry. Kohli is such a powerhouse, you can’t have him intimidating the umpire. It’s a stinker of a decision but you can’t be doing that as a captain.
