Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has picked his candidate who can lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the future. Earlier this season, Chennai had appointed Ravindra Jadeja as their captain for the season. This was the first time that CSK was going to be captained by any other player apart from MS Dhoni.
However, the captaincy change didn’t last long as Jadeja relinquished the duties after failing to cope up with the additional responsibilities. Dhoni was then reinstated as captain and the team started playing well also. However, CSK are out of the playoff race and would be hoping to start from scratch for a new captain for next season.
As the franchise look ahead, Virender Sehwag feels young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad could be a captaincy contender. The former India opener believes there are a lot of similarities between MS Dhoni and Gaikwad. Speaking on Star Sports, the cricket expert said:
“He captains Maharashtra. He plays very quietly. It’s like even if he scored a century, it won’t show in his mannerisms. Even if he scores a 0, you will see the same demeanour. It doesn’t appear from his face if he is happy about scoring a hundred or sad about getting out for a duck. He has control, he is calm. He has all the qualities needed to be a good captain. He is captaining in First-Class cricket so he has an idea how to dictate a match. Who is to be given the ball, what needs to change in the batting order, he has the idea.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s records in IPL 2022
Ruturaj is having a decent season and has regained his form since his disappointing run of innings at the start of the IPL. Him and Devon Conway have looked lethal up top and have been a key reason for the team’s success as well.
He started slow with a couple of below-par scores but has finally hit the ground. So far, Gaikwad has amassed 313 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 132.63 and two half-centuries.
It remains to be seen who will be the captain of the team but Chennai Super Kings have time on their side and can do analysis and consult current captain Dhoni as well on who he thinks can lead the side to glory once he retires.
