Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag shared an epic take on Virat Kohli lifting Sachin Tendulkar on his shoulders following the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup win. Team India defeated Sri Lanka in the finals by six wickets to lift the trophy. The team dedicated the win to Sachin Tendulkar as it was his last ICC ODI World Cup.
To celebrate the historic win and Sachin Tendulkar’s career, Virat Kohli lifted the legendary cricketer on his shoulders. The images of him carrying Sachin went have been etched in the memories of cricket fans worldwide. At an ICC event to announce the fixtures for the upcoming World Cup, Virender Sehwag shared an interesting story. He said,
“Because we rejected, Sachin was so heavy, we couldn’t lift him. We were old. We had shoulder injuries, and MS (Dhoni) had knee problems, while others had various issues. So we entrusted the task to the youngsters. We told them to go and pick up Sachin Tendulkar and take him for a round. And that’s why it was Virat Kohli.”
India will look to win the World Cup for Virat Kohli: Virender Sehwag
The 2023 ICC ODI World Cup is all set to take place in India later this year. Team India will take on Australia on October 8 to kick off their campaign in the tournament. They have not won an ICC tournament since 2013 and will be keen to break the jinx. Former cricketer Virender Sehwag expressed that the Indian team will be looking to win the World Cup for Virat Kohli. He said,
“We played that (2011) World Cup for Tendulkar (thinking) if we win the World Cup, it would be a great exit for Sachin paaji. It’s the same now with Virat Kohli. Everybody (Indian team players) will look to win the World Cup for him [Kohli]. He always gives more than 100 per cent.”
