India pacer Akash Deep made an immediate impact with the ball on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Thursday, July 3. The right-arm quick rocked England early by removing both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks in the same over, leaving the hosts reeling at 13/2.

The breakthrough came in the third over of England’s first innings. Deep bowled a length delivery from around the wicket, angling it outside off. Duckett went for a punch but edged it thickly, with skipper Shubman Gill pulling off a sharp catch in the slips. Just two deliveries later, the 28-year-old struck again with a fuller delivery angled in on off-stump.

Pope tried to flick it but ended up offering a thick leading edge, which KL Rahul safely pouched at second slip. Akash Deep celebrated joyously with his teammates, having delivered a brilliant double blow early in the innings. You can watch the video here:

Gill shines, Akash Deep steps up as India take control in 2nd Test

Akash Deep’s early double strike, following a brilliant 269-run knock by skipper Shubman Gill, helped India dominate proceedings on Day 2 of the second Test against England. After being put in to bat, India piled up a massive 587 in their first innings. Gill led the charge with a commanding 269 off 387 deliveries, hitting 30 fours and three sixes.

He received strong support from Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89), while Washington Sundar (42), Karun Nair (31), and Rishabh Pant (25) chipped in with useful runs down the order. Among England’s bowlers, Shoaib Bashir stood out with figures of 3/167 in 45 overs.

Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue picked up two wickets each, while Brydon Carse, Joe Root, and skipper Ben Stokes claimed one apiece. England currently lead the five-match series 1-0, having chased down 371 to win the opening Test by five wickets at Headingley.
