Indian all-rounder Axar Patel showcased his athleticism during the 2025 Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday, February 23. He executed a brilliant direct hit to run out opener Imam-ul-Haq at the non-striker’s end.
The dismissal occurred in the 10th over of Pakistan’s innings when Imam attempted a risky single off Kuldeep Yadav towards mid-on. Despite no clear run opportunity, he took off but was caught short as Axar’s sharp throw hit the stumps directly. Making his first appearance in place of the injured Fakhar Zaman, Imam failed to leave a mark.

Axar Patel will now aim to make an impact with both bat and ball against arch-rivals Pakistan. The left-arm spinner picked up two wickets against Bangladesh and is also a reliable middle-order batter. Recently, he was promoted to No. 5 ahead of KL Rahul in the ODI series against England.
Pakistan Openers Dismissed in Champions Trophy 2025 Clash Against India
A strong bowling effort from Hardik Pandya and sharp fielding by Axar Patel gave India the upper hand against Pakistan in the first powerplay. Imam-ul-Haq was run out by Axar, while Babar Azam edged one to KL Rahul off Pandya in the ninth over.
At the latest update, Pakistan was 59/2 after 13 overs, with Saud Shakeel and captain Mohammad Rizwan at the crease. After a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in their opener, Pakistan faces a must-win situation against India.
Meanwhile, India, led by Rohit Sharma, started their campaign with a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in Dubai. They will be eager to avenge their 180-run loss to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, having remained unbeaten against their rivals in ODIs since then.
The Men in Blue are also eyeing consecutive ICC titles following their 2024 T20 World Cup victory.
