During the IPL 2022 auction, there was an unfortunate incident that caught everyone off guard. Hugh Edmeades, the IPL auctioneer, fainted on the podium, and the auction was paused for some time. As a stand-in auctioneer, accomplished sports presenter Charu Sharma was called by the IPL chairman Brijesh Patel.
Charu did an excellent job overall and received wonderful feedback from fans on social media. However, he made one huge error that has left the viewers shocked.
On the second day of the auctions, Mumbai Indians started the bid for left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed. Delhi also jumped in, showing interest in the former SRH fast bowler. Mumbai raised their bid for Khaleel to 4.80 crores, at one point during the bidding war with Delhi Capitals.
Delhi also did not hesitate to raise the paddle and immediately went for the 5 crore bid. MI went one step further and offered Rs 5.25 crores. DC co-owner Kiran Kumar then raised the bid to 5.50 crores, but immediately backed out and started having a discussion with other members on the table.
During this time, the auctioneer got confused and stated that the ‘current high bid’ was with Delhi Capitals (instead of Mumbai Indians). He waited for Mumbai Indians to raise the paddle and when it did not happen, he sold Khaleel Ahmed to Delhi Capitals for INR 5.25 crores. This is how Mumbai missed Khaleel’s services and Delhi had to pay 0.25 crores extra to sign him.
