[WATCH]- GT Captain Shubman Gill Engages In Heated Exchange With Umpire Vinod Seshan Over A Missed Wide Call

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill expressed dissatisfaction with the umpires’ handling of a wide call during the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday. Mohit Sharma’s delivery outside the off stump in the 17th over was deemed a wide by on-field umpire Vinod Seshan, prompting Gill to request a review. Replays indicated it was a contentious decision.

Third umpire KN Anantha Padmanabhan explained that since Samson was positioned outside the off stump, the wide line would slightly shift away from the batsman, favouring the bowler. When the trajectory of the ball was paused at the crease, it appeared to be slightly outside the wide line, aligning with Samson’s position outside the off stump.

All the discussion among the third umpire, the director, and the on-field umpire suggested that the wide call might be reversed. However, surprisingly, the third umpire requested to review the footage once again and instructed the on-field umpire to uphold his wide decision.

When the on-field umpire signaled wide, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade reacted with a puzzled expression. Shortly after, Shubman Gill stepped in. In an animated conversation, the frustrated GT captain tried to convey his viewpoint, but the on-field umpire insisted that his initial decision would remain unchanged.

Shubman Gill remained visibly upset after his conversation with the umpire, indicating that he didn’t receive a satisfactory response, leaving the issue unresolved in his view. The consequence of the decision was immediate, as Samson capitalized on the extra delivery resulting from the wide call by Mohit Sharma and scored a boundary.

GT had a terrible performance, conceding 196-3 in the first innings

Despite a strong start, which included dismissing both openers during the powerplay, GT struggled during the middle overs. RR’s in-form duo, Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag, built a partnership of 130 runs for the third wicket, capitalizing on GT’s poor bowling and fielding.

The pair benefited from multiple dropped catches by GT and capitalized on the opportunities.

With RR unbeaten and on the verge of securing their fifth consecutive win after posting 196-3, GT faces a daunting task in chasing down the formidable total, especially without Wriddhiman Saha and David Miller.
