Team India’s Decision Review System (DRS) call proved successful as Tristan Stubbs was dismissed for 14 in the first T20I against South Africa at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, on Tuesday, December 9. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav acted on positive signals from pacer Arshdeep Singh and wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma to challenge the on-field umpire’s not-out decision.

South Africa sought momentum after Quinton de Kock fell for a duck in the opening over. Tristan Stubbs initially showed intent with a couple of boundaries, but following his second boundary in the third over, he edged one to wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma.

Though India were confident they had secured the second wicket, on-field umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal did not give it. Yadav chose to take the review, and the ultra-edge confirmed the ball had brushed just below the bat’s shoulder, producing a clear spike and resulting in Stubbs’ dismissal.

The umpires needed to verify the catch, as Jitesh Sharma had to dive forward to reach the ball. The third umpire confirmed the dismissal, ruling that the wicket-keeper had securely caught the ball with his gloves. You can watch the video here:

This was only Tristan Stubbs’ second appearance at No. 3 in T20I cricket. His first outing in that position was also against India in the 2024 series opener at Kingsmead, Durban, where he made 11 runs off as many balls.

India’s Accurate DRS Call Sends David Miller Back In 1st T20I vs South Africa

A few overs later, experienced batter David Miller fell in almost the same way as Tristan Stubbs, bowled by Hardik Pandya. Coming into the attack after the powerplay, Pandya induced an edge from his former franchise teammate, which went to Jitesh Sharma. The on-field umpire again did not react, leading Suryakumar Yadav to call for a review.

Similar to the previous case, ultra-edge confirmed the edge on the bat, with the ball then grazing the thigh pad before looping toward Jitesh Sharma. The wicket-keeper had to lunge forward to complete the catch, reducing the opposition to 45-4 in their chase.
