Kapil Dev And Team Scripted History With Win Over Mighty West Indies
At the 1983 World Cup, the Indian cricket team, under Kapil Dev’s leadership, entered the tournament as underdogs with little expectation of success. However, they made a strong statement early on with a 34-run win over the mighty West Indies in their opening match.
India followed that up with a five-wicket victory against Zimbabwe, but their momentum took a hit with heavy losses in the next two games—falling to Australia by 162 runs and to the West Indies by 66 runs. Despite setbacks, India bounced back strongly, beating Australia by 118 runs and Zimbabwe by 31 to seal a semi-final spot.
India defeated England by six wickets in the semi-final to reach the final, where they faced the mighty West Indies at Lord’s. Defending just 183, India bowled them out for 140 to secure a stunning 43-run win. Kapil Dev became the first Indian captain to lift the World Cup, marking a historic moment that transformed Indian cricket.
